Dutch Gov Invests €5.3M in Cybersecurity for SMEs

Cyberattacks are increasingly affecting small and medium-sized businesses, and many owners simply do not have the time, knowledge or staff to deal with them. The Dutch cabinet is now putting money behind a solution. According to the Ministerie van Economische Zaken en Klimaat, the cabinet is investing €3.7 million in so-called Cybersecurity learning communities, programmes designed to connect digital security expertise directly with small businesses.

Combined with a €1.7 million contribution from Regieorgaan SIA, the total investment comes to more than €5.3 million, according to the same source.

What are Cybersecurity learning communities?

These are collaborations between education, research and business. The idea is straightforward: students and researchers work alongside small business owners to help them improve their digital security, while at the same time gaining practical experience themselves. It is a way of addressing two problems at once, a shortage of cybersecurity professionals and a lack of accessible security support for smaller companies.

First project: CYRCLE

The first project to receive funding under this scheme is CYRCLE. According to the Ministerie van Economische Zaken en Klimaat, CYRCLE receives €1 million to set up four regional clusters across the Netherlands. These clusters will focus on practical cybersecurity topics relevant to smaller businesses.
